Communion Leeds & Oporto present...

Washington Irving

Since the release of their debut EP Little Wanderer, Head Thee Home in 2010, Washington Irving have been attracting an ever-growing fan base across the UK with their powerful blend of raucous folk pop, blending elements of the Arcade Fire, the Band, the Waterboys, Big Country, and the Pogues. Produced by Marcus Mackay (Frightened Rabbit, Snow Patrol, Sparrow & The Workshop), the EP has received airplay from the likes of Vic Galloway and Huw Stephans on Radio 1, as well as being firmly supported by BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson. Having toured all over Scotland, the band performed at T in the Park, made its debut outside Scotland with a string of dates in Ireland as well as a sold out show at the Lexington in London with Dry the River before finishing the year off with a live session on Radio 1 with Vic Galloway.

In January 2011 the band played a sold out headline show at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, and in April they completed their first UK tour to coincide with their new single - Abbey Gallop. The single was Produced by Ramsay Miller, formerly from The Cinematics, and mixed at Castle of Doom Studios 2 by legendary producer Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, Broken Records, Super Furry Animals, Teenage Fanclub).

Currently working on their debut album, the band have had a great summer at festivals like Stag & Dagger, Wickerman, Deer Shed and Hop Farm.

"If there was any justice in the world, Washington Irving would be spread across the playlists of RADIO 1 & BBC 6 music, like a rash!" Tom Robinson – BBC 6 Music

“Washington Irving have found a wonderful balance between tapping into that beautiful Scottish habit of being completely miserable (think Frightened Rabbit’s seminal The Midnight Organ Fight for cheer level) and fantastically upbeat” - Rockfeedback

Tsar Nicholas III & the Exiles

Fluently guttural, lyrical weirdness.... A dark and witty assembly of soul stripping tracks, speaking of blues based tales of madness, mayhem and murder for those with a penchant for Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash & walking on the wild side.

Daniel Martin Moore

Daniel Martin Moore is a singer and songwriter (and a great many other things arguably less relevant to this particular piece of text) from Cold Spring, Kentucky. On the strength of an unsolicited demo he sent out in January of 2007, Sub Pop released Stray Age in October of 2008, a quietly striking album and Daniel’s debut full-length. And, in February of 2010, they released Dear Companion, an album written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore together, and produced by Jim James from My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Part of the intention with Dear Companion was to draw attention to the problem of Mountaintop Removal (MTR) coal mining, but the music stood on its own as well (Filter: “This is one painfully beautiful record”). Between the release of Stray Age and now, Daniel's been busy, touring with Ben and Jim (including a July ‘10 performance at the Newport Folk Festival), Touring with Iron & Wine, Billy Bragg and My Morning Jacket & generally honing his craft to perfection.

Alongside Liverpool's Misery Guts and Leeds via Blackpool songstress Steph Fraser this is an unmissable night of superb music.

We Were Frontiers

Relatively new to the Leeds music scene We Were Frontiers have already made a notable impact. Their exhilarating and multi-instrumental live show has won the band a strong live following which they hope to capitalise on with their upcoming appearances at this years Leeds and Reading festival.

Musically the band make several nods to the music of Ennio Morricone which they fuse with intricate guitar lines and rich vocal harmonies to create their own unique brand of guitar pop.

Having recorded and independently released three singles earlier this year the band are now set to begin recording their debut album in late September.

The Voyeurist
http://thevoyeuristmusic.tumblr.com/
Singer and lyricist Sarah Nagshineh and guitarist Richard ‘Rusty’ Ruston bonded over a shared and diverse love of hard-hitting tracks, and the mutual desire to create an innovative and multifaceted live and recorded sound. Their debut ‘mini album’ tells tales from the city; highly charged laments and melancholic yet buoyant odes inspired by the manifold metropolis after dark.

Fusing a ruminative, industrially-charged sound with pop hooks and melodic refrains, The Voyeurist champion a vein of dark disco. Combining guitar-weighted urban verve with an edge of electronica, skilfully violent guitar-handling is offset by haunting vocals and provocative lyrics; their emotionally-charged soundscape moving from dance-heavy to ambient.

This year has seen The Voyeurist play consecutively sold out gigs across London in anticipation of their debut EP release, including shows as lead support for Grimes, The Ting Tings, I Blame Coco and Light Asylum. They also headlined Club NME in Berlin, Roundhouse’s Emerging Artist Festival (featuring on the Roundhouse’s 20/20 compilation release) and Underage Festival to packed out crowds. Whilst only a year young they're gained airtime and accolade on BBC 6 Music, XFM and Amazing Radio and cultivated an impressive roll-call of collaborative production credits including official remixes for Patrick Wolf, Visions of Trees, MEN (JD Sampson), Worship and more.

La Machine
http://www.facebook.com/lamachinemusic
Intentionally loud & unapologetically confrontational, La Machine are hard to ignore. Blending industrial rock with elements of electronica and a distinctly punk ethos they create music which is as much abrasive as it is hypnotic.

Like influences Nine Inch Nails & contemporaries Death Grips this is not pop, but all the better for it.

The Horn The Hunt
https://www.facebook.com/thehornthehunt
With both electronic and rock influences, The Horn The Hunt defy straight-forward classification and prefer to call themselves a 'pop band' in reference to their desire to connect with people through story-telling and theatricality. "Like the precise samples they deploy, each member of The Horn The Hunt fits together like parts of a machine, both relying on each other symbiotically to enhance the aesthetic of the other." - Drowned in Sound

Suzy Blu
http://deadpennyrecords.tumblr.com/suzyblu
Armed with just an 80’s drum machine and keyboard, Suzy Blu (Insect Guide/Vacant Kiss) has a brand new sound and lots of songs to add to her ever amazing catalogue of dark-pop hits!

+ DJs & good vibes!

A night of pulsating beats, hypnotic vocals & dark tinged pop to keep you sane over the Summer.
